Congratulations to JJ in Year 8 who recently won the Knight’s Division in the Lancashire Chess Association tournament held in Blackburn.

The tournament was part of the Lancashire Chess Association’s January Junior Congress held at Westholme School in Blackburn.

What is amazing is that JJ has only been playing for seven months, first trying it here at Aspire Academy in Mr Clarke’s chess club: “I wanted to try a new hobby, something I’ve never done before. I really enjoy it and now play several times a week at Aspire Academy, Carleton Bowling Club and Junior Chess Club in Cleveleys.”

This is JJ’s first experience of tournament chess and it was divided into categories based on skill level and experience; having won Knight’s Division JJ will move up to Bishop’s Division next year.

Mr Clarke said: “I’m not surprised that JJ did so well in his first tournament, as I’ve been impressed with how quickly his game has come along, proving himself to be quite the chess player.”
